As all pet owners know, parasites such as fleas, ticks, mites or heartworm are a constant threat to dogs and cats. The reason is simple. Unlike humans that live a very hygienic life, our pets, particularly those are frequently outdoors, are frequently exposed to sources of infection and infestation. This includes a threat that causes approximately 15% of diarrhea cases in puppies, kittens and older pets. The threat is called giardia and it is found in lakes, streams, standing water and other areas that have been contaminated by feces that contain giardia cysts.
The giardia protozoa is passed by pet to pet when feces or feces contaminated water is ingested. The giardia travel in cysts that protect the infection during transport. The protozoa are shed in cysts as well as the population grows inside the dog. When these cysts enter your pet’s body, they enter the intestines where they cling to the walls and colonize. Do you have a dog with sudden or relentless diarrhea? Giardiasis is an acute or chronic gastrointestinal (GI) tract disease. It is characterized by diarrhea and weight loss in both dogs and cats.

Giardia may infect dogs and cats. Some types of Giardia can also infect humans. Transmission is by the fecal-oral route, which means that the parasite is swallowed in food and water contaminated with feces. Note, your pet doesn’t have to eat feces to get the parasite. Usually the transmission is through contaminated water–think puddles, lakes, streams, or water that isn’t suited for drinking in some countries.
Giardia in dogs can be asymptomatic, but when signs are present, the most common one is diarrhea that results in the passage of large volumes of watery feces–think cow patty consistency. It has a distinct odor to it as well, one that I have become all too familiar with after being in veterinary medicine for over a decade. The color of the stool usually isn’t abnormal–if you are seeing grey, green, yellow, or black, you’re probably dealing with another culprit.
Giardia
Intermittent or chronic diarrhea, weight loss, decreased appetite, and vomiting occur less often. Rarely, acute or chronic large-bowel diarrhea may develop, with increased frequency and straining to defecate and the presence of mucus and red blood in the feces.
So how does one treat this parasite if your dog is diagnosed with it? Easily, and inexpensively, provided your dog isn’t so ill that they need IV fluids or hospitalization. The antibiotics used to treat Giardiasis is readily available throughout the world, and many vets will prescribe a dewormer that can be given for five to ten days.
The tricky part is with environmental control and preventing reinfecttion. Pet parents must be vigilant in clearing fecal material from the environment, as repeated exposure to the parasite will cause reinfection. Wash as many areas as possible after removing all organic material, and disinfect the premises with a solution of bleach diluted in water.
If the environment cannot be completely cleaned (for example, some outdoor kennels), remove the animal from that environment. If the infection does not resolve with appropriate medication, bathing, and environmental control, then repeating the medication or administering the meds for a longer period of time (I’ve personally found this to be necessary often), or treating the animal with both antibiotics and anti-parasitic meds may be necessary.
Preventing Giardia in dogs
Dogs should not be allowed to drink from puddles, lakes, streams, or other sources of stagnant water (I know this can be difficult). It may be advisable to treat other animals in the same household while treating the infected, symptomatic pet. There is a vaccine available for Giardia in dogs and cats, but most vets don’t recommend it unless your dog/cat is at really high risk or one of those pets that gets it frequently.
Don’t forget–people can get Giardia too, so wear gloves when picking up feces and use good hygiene. I’ve seen more than a couple clients get it from their pets. It is easier to ingest one of those little cysts than you might think.

These cysts further change to Protozoa and multiply rapidly; they attach themselves to the small intestines of the dog and feed on the vital nutrients depriving the dog from them. Another similar kind of parasite is the coccidian, it too affects the intestinal tracts of the dog but unlike Protozoa which infects through stream water coccidiosis is received through directly consuming animal feces.
Initially Giardia in dogs is not dangerous to a dog’s health but if left untreated it can develop into a serious situation. The main danger is malnutrition since Giardia organisms survive through feeding on the nutrients received through diet to the dog your dog suffers from lack of nutrition resulting in serious health issues including weight loss. Also many dogs experience getting severely dehydrated after getting exposed to Giardia.

To diagnose at least three samples of stools taken over a period of 7 to 10 days to exactly diagnose.
Another way to diagnose Giardia in dogs is through ELIZA which is a test that can be performed either in your vet’s office or sent to a laboratory for testing.

Causes of Diarrhea in Dogs and Cats
Diarrhea is one of the digestive tract disorder the most common pet owners. Diarrhea itself is not a disease but a symptom that accompanies a disease or disorder in the body. Normally, adult dogs defecate once a day if fed one to two times a day. Changes in the form of increased frequency of defecation, stool volume and consistency from soft to liquid and can be accompanied with the presence or absence of stool discoloration is a common symptom of diarrhea. Although diarrhea easily recognizable, but to find the cause and treatment is quite complex because many factors influence the existence of the digestive tract function.
Factors that could cause diarrhea in dogs include:
1. Diet
Diarrhea caused by dietary factors may include the sudden replacement of food, overeating (the portion of food too much), food intolerance, the presence of foreign objects that can not be digested such as grass and unclean food sources such as from garbage.
Replacement food abruptly can cause disruption to normal flora balance in the intestinal tract so that food replacement should be done gradually by mixing the old food with just enough food within 1 week for normal intestinal flora to adapt.
Dogs may also experience intolerance to a particular substance or element content of foods is also influenced by differences in individual sensitivity.
